Global Forest Watch Russia invites You to review the first ever map of intact forest landscapes in Russia
http://www.forest.ru/eng/publications/intact/

Global Forest Watch (GFW) Russia is about to complete a two-year project on mapping of intact forest landscapes in Russia. The project is part of a global project to map the ecological condition of the world's forests. Similar mapping projects are currently carried out in Canada, USA, Chile, and is about to begin in Brazil and other countries.
The Russian part of this project is of particular interest for several reasons:
Russia is the biggest forest country in the world.
Russia has a lot of undisturbed forest left, although less than it is often thought.
Russia is the first country to complete a map of this kind, and so the methods and lessons learned in Russia will be applied in other countries. The purpose of the map is to give an accurate, science-based picture of the extent to which the landscape of forest zone of Russia has been affected by modern human land-use, and to locate these areas on the map. The result will later be used together with results from other countries to form a global picture.

The result is now ready for review and we invite your opinion before it goes to print. The review has the following goals:

  • To improve the map. Concrete, well-supported suggestions will influence the final revision of the map.
  • To improve the description of the map. We welcome your comments and suggestions on the logic and clarity of the method description and the presentation in general.
  • To improve the work in other countries. General comments and suggestions on method and results will benefit the work of GFW in other countries.
  • To improve future work in Russia. We welcome your suggestions for how to improve and expand this work.

Please submit your critique and suggestions as indicated below. All timely replies will be seriously considered. Critical remarks that could not be addressed in the final review will be summarized and made public, if their author so wishes.

When to respond: We need your response no later than 15th February, 2002.
