Cabinet Approves Nuclear Power Engineering Development Strategy

Moscow, 25th May: A strategy for the development of Russia's nuclear power engineering up to the year 2030 and for the period up to the year 2050 was approved, as a whole, at today's meeting of the Russian Federation government, the government information department has told journalists.

A report by the Russian Atomic Energy Ministry set out the fundamental provisions of the strategy which logically follow from the programme for the development of nuclear power engineering in 1998-2005 and in the period up to the year 2010. According to the report, Russia has considerable resources to develop its nuclear power engineering. In particular, the reserve of uranium and industrial infrastructure are enough to achieve a four-fold increase in the output of the capacities currently existing at nuclear power stations.

The strategy envisages a minimum and a maximum options for the development of nuclear power engineering. The minimum option envisages that the output of electricity will reach 235bn kW by the year 2020, whereas the maximum option provides for a growth in the rated capacity of up to 60 GW by the year 2030, with the share of the nuclear power engineering sector increasing to 33 per cent of the overall electricity output, and the share of electricity generated by gas-powered stations shrinking to 20 per cent. The main tasks under the maximum option are to extend the established service life of nuclear generating sets by 10-20 years and build new nuclear power stations so as to ensure intensive replacement of gas and fuel oil in the power engineering sector in Russia's European part.
